ENTRANCE AGE

Initial entry level for all students in Sabine Parish schools is the kindergarten level.  Kindergarten students shall complete the kindergarten curriculum prior to being promoted to the first grade.  Students who come into the parish from outside who are already enrolled in the first grade in a certified school will be permitted to remain in the first grade.

Exceptions to this regulation due to parental request that a child be allowed to have additional time to mature at home prior to kindergarten and/or the need for a child to have additional time at home as recognized by the principal and teacher may be granted by a committee composed of the parent, principal, teacher, supervisor of welfare/attendance and the Superintendent or his/her designee.

The School Board shall require children entering kindergarten at the beginning of the school session for the first time to be at least five (5) years of age on or before September 30 of the calendar year in which the school year begins.  For students entering first grade for the first time at the beginning of the school session, they shall be six (6) years on or before September 30 of the calendar year in which the school year begins.

A child younger than the above may be permitted to enter school provided the child has been evaluated and identified as gifted in accordance with the regulations of the Louisiana Department of Education for such evaluation.  A child admitted to kindergarten shall be eligible to enter first grade upon successful completion of kindergarten, provided all other applicable entrance requirements have been fulfilled.
