CREDIT RECOVERY

The Sabine Parish School Board shall conduct a credit recovery program designed to allow students an opportunity to earn high school credit for courses they have failed in the past.  The program shall be intended to help students by delivering educational services in a flexible, time-efficient manner in order to help them succeed academically and ultimately graduate.

GUIDELINES

  1. Only high school students may earn credit towards graduation.  No student may use credit recovery until he/she has completed the first semester of his/her freshman year.  Students removed from a class by the administration may be placed in credit recovery courses at the principal’s discretion.

  2. Students recovering course credit will receive a grade based on the state approved final exam. The grade will be reported on student transcripts in the appropriate course.

  3. Students shall only be enrolled in credit recovery courses that they have previously failed. Students may not use this program to gain credit for a course they have not already attempted and failed in the traditional classroom setting.

  4. Students may not begin credit recovery in the same semester as a course in which they are currently enrolled.  For example, a student may not use this program to gain credit for the first semester of Algebra I if they are currently enrolled in the first semester of Algebra I.  They must complete an entire semester in the classroom before using this program to recover credit.

  5. One of the following criteria must be met for a student to earn Carnegie credit in a credit recovery course.

    1. The student must complete the course requirements for a computer-based credit recovery program approved by the Department of Education.

    2. The student must pass a comprehensive final exam approved by the Department of Education.  The exam could be an end-of-course exam developed by the Department of Education or a locally-developed comprehensive final exam.  The locally-developed final exam and the passing score shall be submitted for approval to the Division of Assessments and Accountability.

  1. Students shall receive an "F" for any courses begun through credit recovery that are not completed during the term in which they are enrolled.

  2. Seniors utilizing credit recovery must complete the course by May 1 in order to receive credit for the course and be eligible to graduate with their class.

  3. All tests must be taken on site and proctored by the supervisor of the credit recovery program.  Tests shall not be taken remotely via computer. The tests may only be taken one time.

  4. Because of the limited number of licenses available to the credit recovery program, the following prioritization schedule shall be used:

1st priority – Currently enrolled Sabine Parish School senior students eligible for graduation.

2nd priority – Currently enrolled Sabine Parish School students who have failed more than one course.

NOTE:  Under no circumstances will students whose legal residences are outside of the Sabine Parish school district be allowed to use credit recovery.

The Sabine Parish School Board may utilize recovery with any student without regard to the guidelines listed above.  Students who believe they have circumstances that would require deviating from these guidelines should make and appointment with the Supervisor of Secondary Education to discuss their individual situations.
